Translating Chinese Philosophy into the Western Academy: Better Late than Never

To what extent have we been successful in first understanding the Chinese philosophical narrative and then in “carrying it across” into the Western academy? To what extent have we been able to grow and “appreciate” (in the sense of value-added) our own philosophical parameters by engaging with this antique tradition? The self-conscious strategy of textual translation must be to go beyond word-for-word translation and attempt to enable students of Chinese philosophy to read the seminal texts by providing them with a means of developing their own sophisticated understanding of a set of critical Chinese philosophical terms. But allowing Chinese philosophy to speak for itself requires a cultural translation that informs these same terms. Hence, we must begin from the interpretive context by taking into account the tradition’s own indigenous presuppositions and its own evolving self-understanding.

主讲人简介：

安乐哲,北京大学人文讲席教授、世界著名中西比较哲学家、国际知名汉学大师、尼山圣源书院顾问、世界儒学文化研究联合会会长、国际儒学联合会副会长，中国孔子研究院特聘“儒学大家”，原夏威夷大学教授。2013年，荣获第六届世界儒学大会颁发“孔子文化奖”；2016年，荣获第二届“会林文化奖”。他是中西比较哲学界的领军人物，创立中西方思想文化结构性比较阐释方法。2018年荣获“文明之光·2018中国文化交流年度人物”；并荣获“北京大学燕园友谊奖”；2019年荣获“杜威学术学会2019终身成就奖”。曾担任《东西方哲学》《国际中国书评》主编。其部分著作（中国哲学文化典籍阐释研究）：《通过孔子而思》、《期待中国：探求中国和西方的文化叙述》、《主术：中国古代政治思想研究》及《先贤的民主：杜威、孔子及中国的民主希望》。最近发表的著作为《儒家角色伦理学》。更因翻译了《论语》《孙子兵法》《淮南子》《道德经》等书而蜚声海内外。他的所有著作几乎皆译为中文在中国出版，包括他用英文翻译的中国哲学典籍，又被翻译为中文。
